Everpure SPA-400 Water Filtration System
Everpure's water filtration system for the bathroom, the SPA-400, easily fits underneath a bathroom sink.

Recently, Everpure released the SPA-400 water filtration device, which is designed specifically for the bathroom. To learn a little more about this new product, and also get some advice on choosing residential water filtration systems, I interviewed Everpure’s Joe Hutko.

1. Plenty of people use some form of water filtration, but with so many different filters on the market, what separates one from another? And without being too technical, what are some things people should look for when purchasing a filtration system?  There are several key factors to look for when purchasing a filtration system. Number one, you should always look for a third party System certification such as NSF or UL. Be sure that the system, meaning the head and filter cartridge are certified together and are of the same brand. This ensures that the system will filter the water per the manufacturer’s claims. Number two, you should read the label carefully and compare what each system will actually filter at different flow rates and for how many gallons.

Everpure quote2. I realize water filtration is usually associated with drinking water, but do you get any requests about people wanting to use filtered water to wash and bathe in? Are there any advantages to using filtered water for that purpose and is it something that could become more prevalent in the future?  Whole-house filtration systems have been available for a long time. They can filter out a number of things; chlorine and sediment are probably the most popular. One advantage is that some people do not want to bathe or shower in chlorinated water for health reasons; however the downside of removing chlorine from water is that it can increase the chances of bacteria growth within copper plumbing in the home.

3. It seems that water filtration technology continues to improve, but it also seems like completely pure water via filter can't be that far off. So are future filtration advancements going to more about producing products that last longer and cost less, or is there still lots of room for improving the quality of filtered water?  The future is moving towards producing and improving on the quality of drinking water. The next generation filtration systems will use Ultra-Filtration technology that will filter bacteria and viruses.

4. How difficult is it to install the SPA-400 system to bathroom plumbing? Is it something people can do on their own or does it require a professional?  The SPA-400 system is easy to install by most homeowners. The kit comes complete with the necessary materials for installation and hooks up to the existing bathroom faucet, eliminating the need for a second filter faucet to be installed.

5. How long can your product go before the filter should be changed? How much does a new filter cost?  The Everpure SPA-400 filter is recommended to be changed once per year, filtering about 3,000 gallons. A replacement filter will cost approximately $129.99.

I think filtered drinking water in the bathroom is an excellent idea, especially for aging in place projects and homes where the bathrooms and kitchen are far apart.
