Introduction

It’s easy to get creatively discouraged when remodeling a bathroom. Take plumbing fixtures, for example. Many bathtubs look exactly the same. Ditto for toilets. You can find more options for sinks, but most of the creative ones will require you to spend a little extra.

Luckily, the land of bathroom tile is as creative, vibrant and random as Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory (alas, there is no edible or flavored tile, yet). You have everything from basic white subway tile, to porcelain tile that looks like wallpaper, to glass tile that looks like candy. And unlike plumbing fixtures, you can assemble truly unique tile configurations for a reasonable price.

For creating great tile design on a budget, tile expert and author Jen Renzi offers this advice (read the entire tile interview with her in the Bathonista blog):

• “Choose a less expensive tile—solid hues are often the cheapest—but install it in an unusual or dynamic pattern.”
•“Use less square footage of a pricey tile but use it strategically: a stripe at eye level in the shower, within a field of a plainer variety; on an accent wall instead of an entire room; for a backsplash medallion; fireplace surround; or on a window seat or window sill.”
• “Don’t be shy about asking showrooms if they have closeouts, overstock or leftovers, which can be quite affordable.”
