Whirlpools and Air Baths

Introduction

Glossy Whirlpool Tub

With help from a shimmery tub surround, this whirlpool adds a touch of glamour to the bathroom.

Even though whirlpools and air baths are still considered luxury items, they are becoming common fixtures in many new homes.

“More people want to bring the spa experience into their house,” said Shawn Oldenhoff, Kohler’s Senior Project Manager for Bathing. “People really see the value of the spa experience, and they also see more and more spa-type products being sold for reasonable prices.”

A standard size, alcove whirlpool or air bath unit will cost around $1,000, but if you want extra features like colored lighting for chromatherapy, or a larger unit, expect to pay upwards of $5,000.

In-line heaters
Most whirlpool and air bath manufacturers sell units that either come standard with an in-line heater, or you are given the option to purchase an in-line heater. Most people bathe in whirlpools or air baths for extended periods of time, and with a standard water heater, it will be difficult to keep a consistent water temperature. In-line heaters will keep your water from cooling off too quickly. If you are purchasing an in-line heater separately, expect to pay between $200 and $400 for it. The one instance where you might not want an in-line heater is if your bathroom uses a tankless hot water heater, which can provide unlimited hot water.
