Ceramic Tile

Affordable, Natural Looks

Porcelain and Ceramic Bathroom Flooring

Ceramic tiles are a popular option for bathroom floors because of they offer many stylish options at affordable price points.

Ceramic tiles are made from pressed clay that has been baked and hardened. The tiles are either covered with a glaze of metallic oxides or finished with a matte surface.

Styles
Standard or Glazed: One of the more popular ceramic styles, these tiles can have a glossy or matte finish, and have a variety of shapes and patterns to choose from.

Porcelain: Ceramic porcelain tiles are baked at a higher temperature than standard ceramic, which makes them denser than regular tiles. Their color also goes through the tile, rather than only covering the surface. They can be either glazed or unglazed. Porcelain has become a popular alternative to natural stone tiles, since porcelain is just as durable as stone, looks similar to stone, and is not as expensive.

Quarry: Quarry tile is an unglazed mix of shale and clay that also has color throughout. Quarry tiles are available in many shapes and styles.

Surface features
Glazed tiles can have a smooth, glossy surface or a rougher texture that is more like natural stone. Because ceramic tiles are naturally slippery when wet, roughened textures are added to provide better traction.

Pros

  • Ceramic tiles are durable and hold up well to foot traffic and water.
  • Glazed tile resists staining and doesn’t require special cleaning or maintenance.
  • Radiant heat can be installed with tile.

Cons

  • Glazed tile with no texture can be slippery when wet.
  • Unglazed tile needs to be treated occasionally with sealants.
  • Tile, like stone, can be a little hard on the feet.
  • Ceramic tiles do not always retain heat well, and can get cold without assistance from radiant heat.

Price
Expect to pay anywhere from $8 to $100 per square foot.
